What Revolut does and who it makes sense for
Revolut is a licensed European bank with tens of millions of customers – and crypto built right into the banking app: a few taps and you hold BTC exposure next to your current account. No new registration, no exchange learning curve – which makes it the lowest entry barrier there is.
Honest up front: Revolut is the gateway, not the destination. You buy inside an app where bitcoin cannot be used as fully as on an exchange, and fees are higher. Once Bitcoin hooks you, graduate to a real exchange (our Anycoin review, Kraken) and move savings to your own wallet.
- Complete beginners already using Revolut
- Anyone wanting to “touch” Bitcoin with pocket money
- Travellers and freelancers living in the Revolut ecosystem
- NOT for larger amounts or long-term holding
Fees and spread: simplicity has a price
The Standard plan charges roughly 1.5% and up on crypto purchases (with a minimum fee on small amounts); paid plans are cheaper. Add the spread on top. Compared with Kraken Pro (0.16–0.26%) that is several times more – irrelevant at €100, painful at €5,000.
Check current rates for your plan and country directly in the app – Revolut changes them and they vary by tier.
How to buy BTC in Revolut step by step
- Open a Revolut account (link below) and finish verification.
- Open the Crypto section in the app and pick Bitcoin.
- Enter the amount in EUR and confirm (the fee is shown beforehand).
- Optionally set up recurring buys (DCA) – works even for small amounts.
- Before buying big, verify in-app that BTC withdrawal to your own wallet is available for your country/plan – then move it.

The main trade-off: the keys are not yours
Crypto at Revolut sits with a custodian – you hold no private keys, and withdrawals to your own address have historically varied by country and plan (usually available for BTC, but with limits). Before a bigger purchase, verify withdrawal; if it is not available, all you can do is sell back.
Hence our advice: Revolut for the first hundred euros and a feel for it, an exchange + hardware wallet for real savings.
✅ Pros
- Easiest entry – crypto inside the bank you already use
- Recurring DCA buys from small amounts
- Licensed European bank, polished app
- Buy in EUR/GBP with no detours
- Fee visible before you confirm
⚠️ Cons
- Fees ~1.5%+ plus spread – several times exchange rates
- No private keys (custodial)
- Withdrawal to own wallet depends on country/plan, with limits
❓ Frequently asked questions
Is buying Bitcoin via Revolut safe?
From a regulatory view yes – Revolut is a licensed European bank. But a custodian holds the coins and you have no private keys; for larger amounts we recommend an exchange plus your own wallet.
What does buying BTC on Revolut cost?
Roughly 1.5% and up on the Standard plan plus spread; paid plans less. The app shows the exact fee before you confirm.
Can I send bitcoin from Revolut to my own wallet?
For BTC usually yes, but it depends on country and plan and carries limits. Verify directly in the app before buying a larger amount.
Is Revolut good for long-term BTC saving?
No. Fine for a first taste and small DCA; long-term savings belong in a wallet you fully control.
