Why a hardware wallet, and why Trezor

Bitcoin on an exchange is just a promise. Real ownership starts when you hold the private keys – and that is exactly what a hardware wallet is for: a small device keeping your keys offline, out of reach of hackers, malware and exchange collapses.
Trezor is made by SatoshiLabs, the Czech company that shipped the world’s very first hardware wallet back in 2014. The code is open source, audited by the community for years, and the company is based in Prague – no anonymous gadget from a random e-shop. The Safe 7 is the current flagship of the Safe line.
- You hold BTC savings worth more than a few hundred euros
- You want to buy and hold for years, not trade
- You (rightly!) don’t trust exchanges and want your own keys
- You want to secure other coins alongside BTC
How the seed works and why this is safe
During setup the wallet generates a seed phrase – words from which the entire wallet can be restored at any time. You write them on paper (never in your phone, never in the cloud!) and the device signs transactions internally: the private key never leaves the chip.
The newer Trezor Safe line adds a certified secure element – a dedicated chip that makes physical attacks much harder. Even if the device is stolen, nobody gets to your coins without the PIN; you simply restore from your seed on a new device.
Setup step by step
- Buy your Trezor exclusively from the official shop (below) – never second-hand or from third-party sellers.
- Install the official Trezor Suite app (desktop or web).
- The device generates your seed phrase – write it on paper and store it safely (ideally two copies in two places).
- Set a PIN and send a small test amount first.
- Verify that recovery works, and only then move larger savings.

Price and alternatives
A hardware wallet costs a fraction of what it may one day save. Besides the Safe 7 there are cheaper Trezor models (see our discount page), plus alternatives such as Ledger or Cypherock – compared in our tools overview.
✅ Pros
- Keys offline – immune to exchange hacks

❓ Frequently asked questions
What happens if I lose or break my Trezor?
Nothing – your bitcoin is not inside the device, it lives on the blockchain. Buy a new device (any compatible brand) and restore the wallet from your seed phrase.
Can I buy a Trezor second-hand?
Strongly discouraged. A tampered device can steal your funds. Buy only from the official trezor.io shop.
Is Trezor beginner-friendly?
Yes. Trezor Suite walks you through setup step by step. One rule matters: seed on paper, shown to nobody.
Does Trezor support coins other than Bitcoin?
Yes, the Safe line supports thousands of assets including ETH and stablecoins. Purists can install Bitcoin-only firmware.
