What Ledger is and who it suits
Ledger is a French hardware wallet maker (Paris, since 2014) whose devices are among the best-selling in the world. The Nano S Plus is the affordable model for anyone who wants private keys offline without paying for the premium features of pricier models.
The philosophy differs from Trezor: Ledger builds on a certified secure element chip and its own closed firmware, Trezor on fully open code. Both approaches are legitimate – which is why we cover both brands and compare them fairly at the end.
- Anyone wanting an established brand with a huge ecosystem
- Holders of many cryptocurrencies (5,500+ supported assets)
- Users of the Ledger Live app (buy, swap, stake in one place)
- Anyone seeking the cheapest entry to the secure-element class
Security: the secure element, and one affair you should know about
Keys live in a certified secure element chip (the class that protects bank cards and passports) and you confirm transactions physically on the device. The firmware is closed – the security community cannot audit it the way it audits Trezor; in exchange, the chip makes physical attacks harder.
Fairness requires two mentions: in 2020 Ledger’s e-shop customer database leaked (contact data, not funds or keys – but owners became phishing targets), and the optional paid Ledger Recover service (seed backup with third parties) stirred controversy. It stays off unless you enable it yourself. User funds have never been hacked.
Setup step by step
- Buy exclusively from Ledger’s official shop (link below) – never second-hand.
- Install Ledger Live and let the device generate the seed phrase.
- Write the seed on paper, store it in two safe places – never in the cloud.
- Set a PIN, send a small test amount, and verify the address on the device display.
- Only after a verified recovery move larger savings.

Ledger vs. Trezor: how to decide
Want fully open code and a Czech company? Take Trezor. Want the cheapest secure element and the widest coin support in one app? The Nano S Plus is a strong pick. Both roads are safe – philosophy and budget decide. A third road with no seed paper at all: Cypherock X1.
✅ Pros
- Certified secure element chip
- 5,500+ assets in Ledger Live
- Most affordable price in its class
- Huge ecosystem and community
- Physical transaction confirmation on-device
⚠️ Cons
- Closed firmware – not fully auditable
- E-shop customer database leak (2020) = phishing risk
- Controversy around the optional Ledger Recover service
❓ Frequently asked questions
Is Ledger still safe after the Recover affair?
Yes. Recover is an optional paid service that stays off until you enable it yourself. User funds have never been hacked; keys are protected by a certified secure element.
Ledger or Trezor?
Trezor = fully open code, Czech company. Ledger = secure element at the lowest price and the widest coin support. Both are safe; choose by philosophy and budget.
What if I lose my Ledger?
Nothing happens – coins live on the blockchain, not in the device. Buy a new one (any brand) and restore from your seed phrase.
Do I have to use Ledger Live?
It is the most convenient for basics; advanced users can connect a Ledger to other wallets (e.g. Sparrow, Electrum) and skip Live.
